The Spike Wallet is Waterfield Designs latest wallet offering.  When I saw it, I had to have it.  It is a simple one pocket wallet that fits cards and cash folded in half.  The wallet has no hardware, just a simple flap that folds into a slot.  The wallet measures 4.3″ X 3″ and is made of a fairly thick, distressed leather.

Waterfield Designs also makes a business card version that measures 4.3″ X 2.5″.   Note that the business card version does not fit cash folded in half.  You’ll have to fold the cash in thirds or quartered.  Both versions are offered in only one color, which they call Grizzly Brown.  I’d call it a marbled, darkish brown.

This review focuses on the larger, wallet version.

It’s worth noting that Waterfield Designs uses full grain leather, which is a very high quality leather.  If you don’t like scratches and marks on your leather wallet, this is NOT the wallet to get.  This type of leather will  patina and develop a lot of character over time and be uniquely yours.

This wallet wasn’t made to fit 20 cards and a big wad of cash and is intended to be a minimalist front-pocket wallet.  The leather is still stretching but I can carry about 5-6 cards and about 4-5 bills at any given time and this wallet.

The back of the wallet has the Waterfield Designs logo on it and it’s cool how they emboss it into the leather.  It’s like the name was deeply branded into the leather.  My first thought was that it was embossed deep enough that it would make that part of the wallet weaker somehow.  No idea but I’m pretty sure my worry is unfounded.

You can see the very simple design of the wallet closure – flap tucks into the slot on the main body of the wallet.  Note that the more you put in this wallet, it will be harder to tuck in the flap.  As the leather stretches to fit what you need, you should still be able to tuck in this flap….allegedly.

Here is the wallet with about 6 cards and 5 bills.  I like that the folded cash fits really nicely.  Everything fits.

Here is the wallet with the 6 cards and 5 bills with the wallet closed.  Definitely can handle with no issue and will be able to fit a lot more when the leather stretches.

Below are just a few photos of the thin profile, again with the 6 cards and 5 bills.

If I had one complaint about this wallet, it would be the design of the cutout on the pocket.  See below where I point to the offending little squared flap of leather.  This little flap of makes it difficult to put your cards in and out.   When you have more than 2 -3 cards are in the wallet, this little flap bends around the card in the front, making it harder to remove.  When you put cards in, you have to tuck the corner of the card under this flap otherwise it’ll catch in your card.  Most other wallets will have a very smooth scoop from edge to edge (resembling the mouth of a smiley face) and that eliminates any problem with pulling cards in and out.

At the time of this post, the Spike Wallet by Waterfield Designs sells for $25 and qualifies for their special discounted $2 USPS shipping.

Overall, I love the look of this wallet and the design of the closure and the distressed leather is just awesome.  Honestly, the little flap of leather that catches and snags my cards is very close to a deal breaker for my continued use of this wallet…if I can work up the nerve, I will take a pair of scissors and cut that flap off on both sides.   Maybe…..
